Indulgent healthy hot chocolate – gluten free, dairy free, refined sugar free, clean, vegan & Paleo friendly.
Every now and then it’s nice to sip on some steaming hot chocolate in Winter. It goes well with a crackling fire, a cosy couch or beanbag and your favourite movie. Most hot chocolate however is made with a large amount of addictive cane sugar and barely any nutrients. Fear not. With the right ingredients, you can satisfy your hot chocolate craving and nourish your body at the same time.
I’ve used a clean almond milk by Nutty Bruce which can be found in health food shops and is creamier (and contains more nuts). Most almond milks on the market contain carageenan which is bad for you. You can read more about the effects of carageenan here.

I’ve used raw chocolate squares to add decadence to this indulgent healthy hot chocolate. I buy them from Naked Foods which is a great place to buy all your ingredients. You can purchase as much or as little as you like and not waste what you don’t use. Otherwise you can find raw or clean chocolate from health food stores. Raw chocolate is usually made with just 3 ingredients of raw cacao beans, coconut nectar & cacao butter. It adds depth and richness that you don’t want to miss!

Why this is so good for you
Raw cacao powder (pronounced ka-kow) is full of antioxidants and protects against the ravages of aging and cancer, improves digestion, gives energy, improves mood, lowers blood pressure and increases circulation.
Coconut sugar aids in digestive health and is low GI so it won’t spike your blood sugar levels and make you feel lethargic later on.
Almonds alkalize the body (good for fighting inflammation), nourish the nervous system, provide good brain function, build strong bones and teeth, provide healthy fats which aids in weight loss, reduce risk of heart disease and help protect against diabetes.
Himalayan Salt contains all of the 84 elements found in your body. It is anti aging, increases hydration, promotes blood sugar health, prevents muscle cramping, strengthens bones, lowers blood pressure, improves circulation, helps expel toxins from the body, helps reduce acid reflux and helps the intestines absorb nutrients.
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
- 3 teaspoons coconut sugar
- 4 squares raw or clean chocolate plus extra for decoration
- Optional: Pinch of ground cinnamon
- Optional: A dash of fine pink Himalayan salt to bring out the chocolate flavour
- Place the milk, raw cacao powder and coconut sugar in a small saucepan on low heat. Whisk till frothy and coconut sugar has dissolved.
- Once hot, grate the raw chocolate into the saucepan and whisk until fully melted. Add the optional cinnamon and/or Himalayan salt and whisk again.
- Pour into a mug and grate extra chocolate over the top.
