If you’re looking for a place that caters for both the healthy and not-so-healthy crowd then Cafe on Hedges is the perfect place to be. With the best of both worlds, you can be sure you’ll all be satisfied. The menu is extensive, the service fantastic and the vegetarian, gluten and dairy intolerant are well looked after.
My sister discovered Cafe on Hedges as it’s a 5 minute walk from her holiday unit at Mermaid beach and located directly opposite the beach.
On our first few visits we bought a take-away coffee before our morning dip in the ocean. They use cold pressed almond milk in their coffee. After excellent coffee and equally excellent service, we decided to have breakfast there on our last day and we weren’t disappointed.
I loved how this cafe was dog friendly and it was great to see a number of dogs sitting at their owner’s feet.
I started off with the Liver Cleanser juice – carrot, celery, beetroot, apple and ginger (barley grass extra $1) and the Cappucino with cold pressed almond milk. Other non-dairy milks are rice milk and coconut milk.
I was curious to try the Turmeric Latte (Turmeric, coconut milk, cinnamon, coconut oil) so gave it a go. They also have a Beetroot Latte which I’m told is epic. Other non caffeinated drinks include a range of herbal teas.
Other healthy drinks to try are the Coffee Protein Shake (macca powder, protein and chilled milk), Superfood Smoothie (chia, LSA, macca powder, mixed berries, honey and almond milk) and the Coconut Cleanser (coconut water, lemon, cucumber, lime leaf and shaved coconut chips). The less health conscious can try the Caramel Cookie Smoothie, Iced Coffee (espresso, ice cream, cinnamon cream and fresh milk) plus your regular flavoured thick shakes.
They have all day breakfast options (till 3 pm) as well including a Buddha Bowl (kale, spinach, sauteed mushrooms, haloumi cheese, 2 poached eggs, asparagus and quinoa), Sweetcorn Fritters, Acai Bowl (frozen Amazonian Acai topped with strawberry, banana and Hedges toasted muesli (GF available)) Bircher Superfood Muesli, Angus Beef Sausage and Eggs, Eggs Benedict, Hedges Breakfast Burger, Homemade Banana Bread, Tropical fruit basket and the list goes on.
My brother in law had the Hedges Pancakes as per the specials board: Gluten filled pancakes served with caramelized banana, fresh strawberries, ice cream and chocolate popcorn.
Kids are looked after as well for both breakfast and lunch with pancakes, hash browns, bacon and egg Toastie, or Grilled chicken and cheese toastie, Chicken Nuggets and Fries and Angus Beef Burger plus milkshakes, thick-shakes, smoothies and juices.
Lunch is also on the menu and is served from 11.30 am until 3 pm. Raw Pad Thai, Kale Caesar Salad, Vegetarian Quesadillas, Grass-fed Angus Beef Burger, Roast Pumpkin Salad and Prawn Green Curry are just some of the tasty delights on offer.
If you’re after a sweet treat, they have cakes and slices made fresh daily with 80% of them gluten free, dairy free and paleo friendly.
